Where AliExpress fits in the Alibaba family

Alibaba runs several marketplaces, and AliExpress is the only one built for overseas consumers. Alibaba.com sells to businesses; 1688, Taobao and Tmall sell inside China; AliExpress takes Chinese sellers' goods to shoppers abroad in their own language — Wikipedia lists more than 18 languages as of 2016. It's particularly strong in Russia, where it has been the most visited e-commerce site, and in Brazil.

In practice that makes AliExpress the no-agent way to buy from Chinese sellers. Many AliExpress stores are the same factories or resellers you'd find on 1688 or Taobao, with prices adjusted for international shipping and platform fees.

What does AliExpress buyer protection cover?

AliExpress's official buyer-protection page promises a refund if an item doesn't arrive, arrives damaged, or isn't as described within the protection period. The key numbers:

This is real protection, and it's the main advantage over an agent. The catch is timing: you discover problems after the parcel has crossed the world, and returning a cheap item can be more trouble than it's worth. An agent's QC works the other way round — you see the item in the warehouse and send it back to the seller before paying international shipping.

Two practical tips if you use AliExpress: film the unboxing of anything worth more than a few dollars, and open a claim inside the 15-day window even if the seller is still "looking into it" — the window doesn't pause while you talk.

Verdict: AliExpress protects you after delivery; an agent protects you before shipping. Choose based on which risk worries you more.

AliExpress or an agent: a simple rule

• How many items? One or two: AliExpress is easier. Five or more: an agent's single consolidated parcel usually costs less than five AliExpress shipments.
• How much does fit or finish matter? For shoes and clothing where the details matter, QC photos before shipping beat a return after delivery.
• Where do you live? Since May 2, 2025 the US has had no duty-free allowance for Chinese goods, and since July 2026 the EU charges €3 per item category on small parcels. Several separate AliExpress parcels can mean several separate charges.

AliExpress and regulators: what to know

Two regulatory points affect buyers. In November 2023 the European Commission opened proceedings against AliExpress under the Digital Services Act, over the spread of illegal products on the platform. And in 2022 the US Trade Representative added AliExpress to its Notorious Markets list over intellectual-property concerns. Neither stops you buying, but both mean branded listings are more likely to be removed and parcels more likely to be checked at customs.

The US tariff changes hit AliExpress's model directly. Wikipedia notes that Executive Order 14256, effective May 2, 2025, ended the de minimis exemption for Chinese goods — the exemption AliExpress's small direct parcels had relied on. For US buyers that means duty on every order, which narrows the price gap between AliExpress and other routes.

For everyday unbranded goods — phone accessories, tools, basics — AliExpress remains a straightforward option. For fashion finds from spreadsheets, most of which live on Weidian, the agent route is the one that fits.
